Once we've acclimated ourseves to Taiwan (jetlag, food, temperature, language...) we took the train to Hualien, on the East coast. Main attraction of this area is Taroko gorge, a valley where rocks are mainly marble and also very wild as earthquakes, typhoons and landslides destroy most of the road every 5-10 years! We took an hop on/hop off bus which allowed us to visit the main sites. A good few sites were unfortunately closed due to landslides, which seem very common there. Taiwan is a lovely place to visit, with a very few Westerner tourists (most of the tourists are from China). If you don't mind ordering food without knowing what you'll get and not too bad at sign language, Taiwan is for you!
